The Canon 17-40mm f/4L is an excellent wide-angle lens at a very reasonable price. It’s great for close-up work. Key features include:
L-series build quality
11-inch minimum focusing distance
Near-silent ultrasonic motor
Great value
Excellent for Close-Up Work. The lens’s minimum focusing distance is just 11 inches (28cm) throughout its entire range of focal lengths, which makes it very useful for close-up work. All of the focusing and zooming action is done internally, with no changes in the lens’s size.
Sharp Image Quality. It’s a stop slower than the Canon 16-35 f/4L IS5, but otherwise there’s very little difference between them. Some reviewers have found the 17-40 is actually sharper at the wide end, and it may be less prone to lens flare.
