The Canon EOS R50 is a lightweight, compact mirrorless camera with a feature set designed for content creators, vloggers, and anyone else who wants to move beyond using a smartphone for photos and videos. Key features include:
24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor; DIGIC X processor
Designed with vloggers and content creators in mind
Livestreaming-capable without additional software
Dual-pixel autofocus with Movie for Close-Up Demo mode
24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and DIGIC X Processor. The Canon EOS R50’s 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor works in tandem with the DIGIC X processor to produce high-resolution stills and video with a fair amount of speed. Its back-illuminated design lets in plenty of light, giving you reduced noise, high clarity, and smooth color rendering, even when you’re shooting in low light. The native ISO range of 100-32,000 can be expanded to 100-51,200, making this camera suitable for working in a wide range of lighting conditions.
High-Quality Still Shooting. The R50 supports up to 15 fps continuous shooting with a silent electronic shutter and 12 fps with an electronic first-curtain shutter with autofocus and autoexposure readings between each frame. The new Advanced A+ Assist feature automatically reduces overexposure so that you can capture dynamic shots or bright portraits even when you’re shooting at night or dealing with harsh backlit conditions. Advanced A+ Assist takes multiple continuous shots to help make sure you get the best possible image.
UHD 4K Video Capture. The EOS R50’s 24.2MP sensor lets you capture highly detailed UHD 4K RAW video at up to 30 fps in 8-bit or 10-bit using the sensor’s full width. You can also record 10-bit HDR video and Full HD video at 120 fps for slow-motion playback.
Designed for Vlogging. The combination of uncropped UHD 4K 30 fps movie recording, Full HD capture at up to 120 fps, Dual-Pixel CMOS autofocus tracking, and the new Movie for Close-Up Demo autofocus mode makes vlogging and video content creation convenient. You can continuously record video for up to one hour, so you don’t have to keep too close an eye on the recording time while you’re creating content. There’s a standard 3.5mm mic input, but there’s nowhere to attach headphones for monitoring—an odd choice for an otherwise vlogging-intensive design.
Vertical Movie Mode and Aspect Markers. You can set movie-rotation information during or after movie recording, so that your videos can be played in vertical orientation when viewed on a smartphone. The Aspect Markers feature displays visual markers for various aspect ratios that you may want to consider when posting the same file to different social-media platforms, helping you figure out the ideal composition for your videos.
Livestreaming. The R50’s UVC/UAC compatibility means you can use it as a webcam to stream live video in Full HD to video-conferencing software like Zoom, Skype, and Microsoft Teams without the need for additional software. The full-frame image sensor gives you versatile exposure options in addition to strong subject-background isolation when using bright-aperture lenses.
Dual-Pixel CMOS Autofocus II. This camera’s Dual-Pixel CMOS Autofocus II system features 651 high-precision autofocus zones to give you smooth, fast, and accurate focusing. A new Movie for Close-Up Demo mode prioritizes anything close to the camera, but otherwise uses face-detection mode. This mode was expressly designed for vloggers who want to hold an item or product up, have the camera quickly refocus on it, and then quickly refocus back on them once they lower it. There are subject-tracking modes designed to follow humans, animals, and vehicles, while an Auto mode uses a combination of all the subject-tracking modes to automatically apply the best algorithm to the subject you’re shooting.
Body Design. The large OLED viewfinder has a 2.36m-dot resolution and 0.96x magnification that make it great for easy eye-level composition. The 3.0-inch, 1.62m-dot rear touchscreen LCD monitor allows you to pull focus in video mode and make quick adjustments in the camera’s menu system, while its vari-angle design makes it great for vlogging and other front-facing recording applications, and for shooting at high and low angles. A built-in pop-up flash gives you additional illumination in low light, and the camera body’s tank-like build and weather sealing keep out the elements and dust.
Connectivity Options. Integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi let you use Canon’s Camera Connect app to instantly transfer images to your mobile device so that you can easily share them on social media, in email, and to the cloud. You can also use it to shoot remotely, livestream, and to remotely control the camera. There are also wired connectivity options, and this camera includes a remote port, a USB-C port, a micro-HDMI port, and the aforementioned microphone input.
Next-Gen Multi-Function Shoe. This camera’s next-gen Multi-Function Shoe is an update to the conventional hot shoe that adds a row of pins at the front to give you expanded accessory functionality and to power certain accessories that typically need separate batteries. You can use the Canon AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter to use select legacy shoe-mounted accessories, such as the Canon ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter – V2 and Canon Speedlite EL-1, with the shoe.
User Flexibility. The R50 records images/video to UHS-II SD memory cards (not included) for broad compatibility in a familiar format, but please be aware that it only has one memory-card slot. The camera is powered by the popular LP-E17 rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
