The Nikon 800mm f/5.6E FL ED AF-S VR is a telephoto lens that is compatible with both FX and DX-sized image sensors. It’s currently the longest lens in Nikon’s lineup. Key features include:
4-stop vibration reduction
Fast, nearly silent autofocus with full-time manual focus
Electromagnetic aperture mechanism
Excellent image quality
Currently the longest lens in Nikon’s lineup, the 800mm f/5.6E FL ED AF-S VR features Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor, which provides fast, accurate autofocus performance and instant manual focus override for switching between AF and MF. The in-lens vibration reduction provides up to 4 stops of correction and helps to minimize camera shake. The 800mm f/5.6 has an electromagnetic aperture mechanism that provides greater exposure control stability when shooting at faster continuous frame rates.
Optically, the 800mm f/5.6 has an advanced lens construction that uses fluorite elements in the first and second positions to minimize weight and chromatic aberrations. Two extra-low dispersion (ED) elements are used to further limit optical aberrations while increasing image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity, while Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coat prevents surface and internal reflections, as well as ghosting.
This rental includes the Nikon TC800-1.25E ED AF-S teleconverter, which is designed specifically for use with the 800mm. This teleconverter increases the lens’s focal length to 1,000mm f/7.1 on FX crop-frame cameras and 1,500mm on DX crop-frame cameras. The lens’s ED element ensures high image quality and its electromagnetic aperture mechanism retains its full functionality while you’re using the teleconverter.
“E” is a reference to an E-Type lens which uses electronic aperture blade control for improved auto exposure accuracy during continuous shooting. Please note, E lenses have very limited compatibility. Refer to the camera compatibility list under Resources to determine whether or not this is the appropriate lens for your needs.
“FL” designates a lens containing some elements made with fluorite rather than glass. This allows the lens to be lighter without compromising optical quality.
“ED” stands for “Extra-Low Dispersion” Glass and is a reference to specialized glass used for the correction of chromatic aberrations.
“AF-S” refers to Auto Focus that features Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor or “SWM.”
“VR” or “Vibration Reduction” is a reference to Nikon’s proprietary in-lens image stabilization.
If you’re using the included teleconverter, the lens’s autofocus feature will only work with f./8-compatible cameras such as the D3 series, D4, D600, D700, and D800.
Due to its electromagnetic aperture mechanism, this lens isn’t compatible with Nikon D90/D200/D2 DSLRs or older.
