Pickup Patterns and Recording Modes. With the portable Sony ECM-M1 Compact Camera-Mount Digital Shotgun Microphone, you have the option of going between eight selectable pickup patterns and recording modes using an integrated dial control. These modes include superdirectional, unidirectional, omnidirectional, superdirectional (rear), superdirectional (front and rear), super directional (front and rear separate), stereo, and ultra-directional.

More On Modes. Superdirectional patterns are great for those vlogs or interviews where the subject in front of the camera is the main focus, and effectively eliminates background noises from behind the camera. Ultra-directional focuses in on this area even further for a more limited pickup range. Unidirectional is perfect for multi-person conversations happening in front of the camera, creating a wide field to pick up the most pristine audio possible. Omnidirectional offers a pickup pattern from all directions, which is the preferred mode if you’re talking behind the camera.

Control and Noise Filters. On the rear and side panels of this device, you’ll find the controls for pickup pattern, gain, and audio level. With the ECM-M1, noise-cut and low-cut filters are provided to reduce extreme ambient noises and completely eliminate low-frequency noise thanks to digital signal processing algorithms. This will maximize audio quality at the recording stage, leaving more to work with in post production.

Designed to Last. The ECM-M1 guarantees cable-free use, thanks to Sony’s new M1 shoe mount. The absence of cables means that no noise can be transmitted to the microphone mechanically via cables and connectors, and with the shock & vibration-suppressing design, low-frequency or handling noise is a thing of the past.
