Dual XD linear motors deliver higher thrust that can keep up with the demands of current and future high-speed cameras, with subject tracking improved by as much as 7×. All of this is offered inside a lighter and smaller form factor.

Focus breathing is minimized and there is added support in the lens for the breathing compensation function in select cine-line cameras. As with its predecessor, the 85mm f/1.4 GM II is equipped with a physical aperture ring that can be de-clicked for silent and smooth aperture changes mid-scene.
